How to create adorable characters in Procreate using yummy texture

Working with texture in Procreate can be super overwhelming! There are so many ways to do it, from using texture brushes to applying gritty overlays. I’m hoping to change that and make it super easy and fun to add texture without the stress with The Nitty Gritty Brushbox!

In this playful tutorial you’ll learn how to create a simple, yet super adorable, bear in Procreate! The yummy texture we’ll be applying adds a magical touch to the critter and doesn’t require years of digital painting skill!

The brush system is designed to help you apply texture without the stress, and encourage you to let loose and have fun as you watch gritty texture emerge with each stroke.

Ready for some fun? Let’s draw!

My Canvas Grunge brush performs differently from the video, the brushstroke has a white line in the middle. I wonder what went wrong?

Hi Garv, Have you perhaps changed any settings of the brush? Please can you email me a screenshot of how the brush looks when you use it and also a screenshot of the brush when you tap on the brush to open the Brush Studio? Please email it to [email protected]. Thank you so much!

      Hi Lisa,
I am new in Procreate and just fell in love with your hand drawn style. You ‘ve made possible to create really stunning hand drawn art full of character with the digital media, You are very talented.

Why don’t you paint the background in a different layer? Is it necessary to paint it around the bear?
Thank you for sharing your artistic process.

Hi Be! Thank you so much for your lovely comments, I really appreciate it! The reason I like painting “around” the bear as oppose filling in an entire layer under the bear, is to mimic the same process you would with real paints, this is of course a stylistic choice as there are many different ways you could approach the background. I personally love the method of leaving a slight gap between the bear and the lighter colour background which really emphasises the painterly look. Hope that answers your question. If you have any other questions at all, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

I’m happy with your art, I’m drawing and I had no idea how to do it, the only thing I would ask you is to upload the tutorials to YouTube in a private link because I only speak Spanish and I could translate them to learn more. For now I am doing everything that I observe since I don’t speak English. Thank you, you and your art are great.

I adore your work. I’m new to Procreate and digital art . I bought your brush pack and am so happy I found it. I watched the warm up tutorial and was going to watch again to work along with it but can’t find a way to rewatch it. Tried several ways even to going out of file and reloading. Is it only to be viewed once? How can I view again and follow along in split screen? Thanks for your help!

      Hi Christy,

Thank you so much for your lovely comments and for your business, it’s much appreciated! You can watch the warm-up tutorial here. If it’s not loading, try and clear your cache on your browser first, that usually does the trick

If you’re on your iPad, I would recommend closing the browser window, force-quit the browser app then load again. Hope that helps! If you have any other questions at all, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

I think your work is amazing! I just purchased the Nitty Gritty brush set and had so much fun drawing the bear. I’m trying to teach myself how to draw/paint for the first time in my 68 years, having no past training. I really adore your illustrations. Thank you.

Thank you Gail! I really appreciate your kind words!!

I’m so happy for you that you are taking up drawing, that’s amazing and very exciting. My Mom also only started drawing and painting later in life and she now has an Etsy shop and her own website where she sells her work. I’m SO proud of her, her work is amazing! Here’s her website if you’re keen to have a peek.

I had an issue with the Canvas Grunge brush behaving differently from Lisa’s tutorial wherein it makes a streak in the middle.. I emailed Lisa and she replied immediately and helped me fix the issue. Apparently, the Dynamic brush scaling in Prefs should be turned ON for these dual brushes to work properly. Works perfectly now! These brushes are so much fun to work with! Highly recommended!

Thank you Lisa for your assistance. I’m definitely looking forward to your next creations! Have a good one!

Hi Lisa I have just bought the set of brushes can’t wait to get experimenting
I was wondering if I was wanting to print my artwork from my iPad would you recommend setting the canvas as RGB or CMYK? As I’ve been told when it’s been saved as one you can’t change to the other!!

      Hi Michelle,
Thank you so much for your purchase! Colour modes are always a tricky topic. I prefer working in RGB on my iPad even if I’m printing the artwork, I prefer how the colours display, as RGB is designed for screens. However, the problem is most printers print in CMYK, but not all. Because of that, I use an app like Adobe Photoshop to convert to CMYK if needed, then adjust the saturation to intensify the colours – this is usually the biggest difference, RGB looks a lot bolder and more intense than CMYK so you might need to adjust the saturation. You can always convert your colour profile using a free online app like photopea.com if you don’t have Adobe Photoshop AFTER you’ve created your drawing. So in short, you don’t need to choose CMYK upfront, but you might prefer to use that mode to get a more accurate reflection of what the colours will look like printed (although it’s not 100% accurate). Hope that helps!

    Hi Lisa,
I’m really relatively new to Procreate and digital art altogether. I’ve bought a few of your brush sets now and find your tutorials really helpful for achieving that lovely texture. I was wondering though if you might have a tutorial that explains why you change the layers to colour burn/linear/multiply etc and what each of those achieves as I’m a bit confused as to what purpose they serve and whether you need to choose what you set each one to before or after you start to draw/colour on that layer?

      Hi Nicola,

Thank you so much for your purchases! So glad you find the tutorials helpful! I don’t unfortunately have a tutorial on that (I’ll definitely at it to my list for possible future tutorials). All the difference blend modes can be confusing, the best way to get to know them is to experiment. But having a basic understanding of what they can do is also a good starting point. You can read more about each blend mode here. Hope that helps in the meantime!
