How to paint sky in Procreate – quick and easy method

Tackling backgrounds in an illustration can be intimidating which is why I wanted to share a quick and easy technique for painting sky in Procreate.

I tend to focus on creating characters and like many of you find backgrounds more challenging.

In a recent Christmas illustration project I experimented with a painting technique to add colour to the background. I found it to be stress-free and a quick solution for applying colour to large areas that’s still rich in texture.

I used a canvas and brushes from AquaReal 2 for my overall illustration, but for the sky I used lovely gloopy textured brushes from the Messy Paintbox. Hope you find the technique useful!

Pin the image below for later. Happy painting!

    • Awww! Thank you Sandy! That’s really lovely of you to say. I usually use a sepia brown colour, it ties in with my signature palette I like using You could also try a light grey or a muted blue, depending on your palette.
