LESSON
Independence

What does the platform dictate?

This is one of the key factors that helped me decide which platform to use.

I personally don’t like services that dictate the amount of products you can sell based on the payment plan you’re on. Or how much commission they take per transaction.

This was especially important for me when I had no idea whether I could make a success of my shop. I didn’t want to pay extra to have unlimited products for sale if I wasn’t sure I would sell enough to cover costs. The freedom to list as many products as I wanted without being tied into a plan was important to me.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing:

  • Are you tied into a plan that limits the amount of products sold?
  • Does the platform take commission? If so, is the percentage based on how many products you sell?
  • Will signing up to their plan cause you unnecessary stress from the pressure of having to sell to cover their fees?
  • Do you have to purchase additional plug-ins or “extras” in order for your shop to run smoothly?

In my experience, the more independence you have with your shop (ie. not tied into plans and commission on sales), the less user-friendly the platform. You might be willing to pay the fees and commission for the ease of use.
