Back to: Free Course: Tips for starting your own online art and digital products shop
Start Simple
If you don’t have a website in any shape or form, your priority would be to get one up as soon as possible… without a shop section.
What? No shop?
That might seem counterintuitive! But the reason for giving that advice boils down to this: setting up a functioning shop can take some time, and this can easily set you back from launching your website altogether.
The sooner search engine bots can crawl your site to index it (which needs to be live for them to do that), the sooner you can be found. Once people start to find you, you can begin to grow your email list, which is an essential tool to selling your art or digital products online.
My first stab at creating my website consisted of a couple of pages with the “Shop” menu linking to one of my other marketplace stores. It wasn’t perfect but it meant I had a website up and I could drive traffic to one of my shops.
Make no mistake, the aim is to eventually have your own online store, but if you’re starting a website from scratch here’s what I recommend:
- Start with a simple design with a few pages.
- Link your “Shop” menu to an existing store.
- Once that’s up, you can then get on with building your own online store in the background.
- In the meantime your new website can start building your email list*.
*There are countless articles, videos and courses on building an email list because it’s an important part to the success of an online store. I highly encourage you to do some reading up on the topic for some tips on how to grow your list.
