In this fun and approachable class, I’ll guide you through my creative process for developing and painting adorable animal characters with a lovely vintage feel.

A Step-by-Step Creative Process

This class is divided into two main stages so you can comfortably follow along from start to finish.

Part 1: Planning & Sketching Your Character

We’ll begin by exploring references for both the pose and clothing. We’ll discuss how to identify important features in the reference to help you achieve dynamic results in your character.

From there we start building a rough sketch together step-by-step. You’ll watch my process as I use toddler references, vintage clothing inspiration and simple shape-building techniques to create an adorable animal character full of personality.

Part 2: Painting & Adding Vintage Charm

Next, we’ll move into colour and painting techniques using Procreate. I’ll show you how I use muted vintage-inspired palettes, texture and charming details to create a nostalgic whimsical feel.

I’ll primarily be using watercolour brushes from my AquaReal 2 brush set, but you’re absolutely welcome to use any brushes or painting style you prefer. The most important part is understanding the principles behind clean linework, colour, and charming vintage details.

This course walks you through every stage of creating a whimsical vintage-inspired animal character, from finding the best reference images and sketching your rough, to adding colour, texture and charming finishing details.

Even if you’re completely new to drawing, you’ll be able to follow along at your own pace and create an adorable character you can feel proud of!

Do I need any supplies or special software to take this course?
This class is designed around the creative process I use for drawing and painting adorable vintage-inspired animal characters in Procreate. To follow along exactly as demonstrated in class, you’ll need an iPad, an Apple Pencil and Procreate installed on your device.


That said, many of the techniques and principles covered in class, such as character design, colour choices, proportions and adding vintage charm, can absolutely be applied using other drawing apps or even traditional art mediums. However, for the fullest experience and to follow the lessons step-by-step, I do recommend using Procreate.
