A simple drawing warm-up, perfect for getting started in the new year

Looking for a simple drawing warm-up to help you ease back into your drawing routine?

I think you’ll love one of my favourite, no-pressure drawing prompts I use to get me back on track.

Before I dive into that, I wanted to say something that you might need to hear.

It’s completely okay if you took a break from drawing over the busy season.

Trying to maintain a creative practice over the holidays can be close to impossible. If you did manage to create and even thrive, I’m genuinely in awe! And would love to hear any tips you have, feel free to drop them below in the comment sections.

I find though, with so much going on, plus a big shift in routine and low energy levels, it’s difficult to keep up with a consistent creative practice all the time. I really needed this reminder myself. I took a long break from drawing too.

For a while I barely picked up my pencil or opened Procreate as much as I thought I “should”. I even caught myself feeling guilty for taking a break, which is an old mindset I struggled with in my early days, when I pushed myself to the point of exhaustion. Thankfully I swiftly put an end to that thinking – guilt-tripping yourself for taking a break is incredibly unhelpful and unhealthy! Creativity ebbs and flows, we are meant to take breaks.

So if you’re feeling a little rusty, disconnected, or unsure where to start again, let’s start slow together.

No pressure. No catching up. No expectations.

Just a gentle creative restart.

To help with that, I wanted to share a simple little drawing prompt you can try today if you feel like it:

It’s one of my favourite warm-ups 👉 Here’s how it works:

  1. Pick a single shape, like a bean which I love for its versatility.
  2. Turn it into any character you like.
  3. Don’t overthink it, just sketch whatever comes to mind. Even five or ten minutes is plenty.
  4. Be proud that you just spent time improving your drawing skills!

Here’s a rough sketch of my little character to kick things off. I’ll share more on Instagram as I ease into my sketch practice again.

Speaking of drawing prompts…

I’ve got something super exciting to share with you very soon! Although I haven’t been drawing much, I have been working on an extensive Character Drawing Workbook packed full of creative techniques, drawing prompts, tutorials, tips and a whole lot more!

I’m almost ready to share it with you. Fingers crossed it should be by the end of this month! Until then, wishing you an inspired creative start to the year!
